Stay Inspired!

Welcome to Inspiration Corner again.

This has been a difficult week for many. With the suicides of two major celebrities, a lot of people are feeling on edge. Add to that the current political climate, and personal life stresses, and the mix seems to be contributing to a great deal of emotional turmoil for a lot of people.

So, how do you stay in a good emotional space, when it feels like all around you people are unhappy, upset, or angry? How do you regain — or retain — your equilibrium during troubled times?

  1. Acknowledge your feelings. Validate your feelings, but realize that they may not be grounded in reality. You may feel like everything seems bleak and dark, but realize that life may not be as bleak and dark as you feel it is.
  2. Take a deep breath and walk away. Distance yourself from the situation. For example, if someone writes a nasty note or comment to you, close the computer and walk away. Do something calming — a walk in the fresh air, a cup of tea, a few moments of meditation. This will help you regain clarity before you respond. It also helps to decide whether we even need to respond. I did this the other day and realized that I didn’t even want to respond, and there was no need. I just ignored the reply to a post.
  3. Surround yourself with positive people. No, I’m not saying to ignore friends who are upset. But while attempting to regain your equilibrium, don’t steep yourself in negativity. The last thing we need when upset, is a mutual pity party. Misery truly does love company and mutual venting sessions too easily turn into “let’s find everything that’s wrong with the world” conversations.
  4. Remember to look for the good in life. If all you look for are negative events, the world will happily provide you with them. Conversely, if you look for all things bright and beautiful, chances are you’ll find a lot of wonderful things out there.
  5. Keep a gratitude journal, find at least three truly joyful things in your life to be grateful for each day. I don’t know many people who can’t pinpoint at least three wonderful things in their lives.
  6. This is perhaps one of the most important. Walk away from social media for a while. And when you do peek in, scroll past the drama and leave it untouched. I have also been training myself to share positive, happy posts on my page, in my blog, and in general. I’m trying to remember that old cliché, don’t rain on my parade. If someone has a happy, let them have that happiness without adding a negative note.

So there we are. Six ways to maintain a positive space during troubled times. No, I don’t ignore the things going on around me, but I choose to focus my energy on making positive inroads in the world. A kind word, a gracious gesture, these can go so far in making people’s lives more bearable.

I have a challenge for you this week: when you find yourself angry about something you can’t change, walk away and do something positive. If you can’t change what’s wrong, do something kind or good to help balance out that energy.

I hope you have a wonderful week. Remember, there is love in this world, there are joys in this world. And the older I get, the more apparent it is to me the greatest joys in life as those we create for ourselves.

    Thank you!
I love the gratitude journal. Not just for myself but my grandchildren. What a wonderful thing to start them doing.
    Thanks again.

Jenni, you have been one of my most vocally supportive readers over the years. For that, I am grateful. Thank you! Have a wonderful week. 🙂
