So, Saturday was my birthday. Sam suggested for my present, I get a new wedding ring. Now you have to understand that this is my fourth wedding ring for one marriage.

The first one we got when we were very poor and just starting out, and I had a green tourmaline set into silver. It was pretty, though not what I really wanted. But it was my wedding ring and I was happy. A few years later when we were doing better Sam asked if I wanted to have the stone reset for our anniversary. I said yes.

Ring number two: I got it reset into a beautiful band of yellow gold that was embossed with leaves all the way around the band. It fit my nature at the time. Since our last name means Green Tree in Elvish (yes, Sam and I created our last name together and had it legalized a little while after we were first married. He took my last name to begin with, but I didn’t want to keep my stepfather’s name so we decided to create something that meant a lot to both of us), the band and color fit.

Fast-forward to 2010.

I always keep a ring jar in the kitchen to put my ring into while I’m cooking. So as usual, I put my ring in the jar while I made dinner. And later, I go back and my ring is gone. Vanished. Disappeared. NO WHERE. We looked everywhere for my wedding ring but we couldn’t find it. So, a few weeks later, we go to my favorite jeweler (who unfortunately went out of business with the recession) and I choose a new wedding ring. This time I chose white gold with a center garnet, and diamond baguettes and pavé diamonds. And I love this wedding ring — it fits my nature.

Fast-forward to 2012. At this point, I have been losing a lot of weight and my wedding ring begins to get loose. Eventually I put it away when it starts sliding off my finger several times and I almost lose it in the street. So I go without a wedding ring and it feels odd.

Fast-forward to 2015. It’s January, I’ve lost over 100 pounds since I started, and though I expected to have my rings resized last year — I hit a plateau and maintained my weight loss. But I’m not done yet, this year I’m kicking it into high gear and trying to take off the last of the weight that I want to lose. So I can’t have my rings resized yet because you can weaken the metal too much by having them resized several times.

So, a couple weeks ago, Sam suggested that for my birthday we buy me a new wedding ring until I can have my other one resized.

And that’s what we did on my birthday. I chose a band that I can wear as an anniversary ring afterwards. And it’s lovely and it feels so good to be wearing my wedding ring again. I’ve never been one to be comfortable beginning “claimed” — I’m a very independent person and Sam and I have a rather unique relationship and are not at all clingy.

However, I do like wearing a wedding ring. Hell, I love bling in general. And my new wedding ring is really beautiful, it’s not what I expected to pick out but it caught my eye and it fits my nature at this point. So who knows? Maybe my garnet wedding ring will become an anniversary band and this one will stay is my wedding ring! Maybe I’ll trade off depending on my mood! I don’t know. One way or another I will  have both rings and love them both.

Oh and for those who want to know, my new wedding ring is white gold with clear and blue diamonds. And here’s a picture of it.

As for the rest of my birthday, I had a couple close friends over and we ate rumtopf, and I did make a cake because hell it’s my birthday. It was allergy safe and tasty though not low-carb and that’s fine. And here’s a picture of it:

Cake Cake layers

For those interested in how I made it, I used a box of Cherrybrook Kitchen chocolate cake mix, and I used a box of their vanilla cake mix — and to the vanilla I added 2 tablespoons of raspberry extract, 3 tablespoons of Framboise liqueur, and some red food coloring. I made the cake mixes as directed otherwise, and swirled them together in the pans to make a marble cake. The frosting: 1 — 8 ounce tub of Tofutti better than cream cheese, 1/4 cup of margarine, and a cup and a half of organic powdered sugar. To this I added 2 tablespoons of raspberry extract, and 2 cups diced strawberries. I spread half of the frosting between the layers, and then piled the other half on top of the layers. Then I sprinkled some dairy free chocolate chips over the top and sliced strawberries. It was extremely good.

Happy Sunday and talk later!

Hope you had a good birthday, very best wishes. Just love the idea of your surname being chosen from an elvish word, can I ask is Samwise your husbands given name or did he choose it himself? I love elvish words, our house is named Imladris, the elvish word for Rivendell from Tolkien’s novels, oh and that ring was beautiful

Samwise is his legal name. *grins* It was close before that but he legalized it to Samwise when we changed our last name.

Happy Belated Birthday. It sounds like you had a wonderful birthday to start out a great new year! I have taken you as a role model on weight loss. I am starting on the stationary bicycle, riding at least 4 days a week.
