There are a lot of changes going on here in Yasmine land. So hang onto your hats and please, read through the whole post so you can find out a lot of cool and unusual things.

First: I now have two Facebook groups. The first is a discussion group and the second is more of an announcements group. The reason I have created these groups is primarily because of the organic reach situation on the Facebook fan pages. I am lucky to reach even 10% of the people who like my page at this point, which means about 90% of people who LIKE my page are not getting any notifications. But in the groups, everybody gets notifications. So if you’re a diehard Facebook user, and you really want to know what I’m putting out, I suggest joining one of the groups! I’ve also opened up my Tumblr again, because I realize Twitter really isn’t a viable platform for me to be on as much as I was. Tumblr will be an alternative for those who don’t like FB, but neither replaces my blog/website.

Second: I got Arcs of flight from death! You know what that means!

CONTEST TIME!

Except this time, if you win one of the arcs you also get to be part of my temporary and informal Street Team. Which means you will win a few other goodies/swag with the arc, and if you want to help me out there will be a few things that you can do. Don’t worry, they won’t involve car chases, heists, deviant behavior, or acts of heroism. Nope—they’ll all be easy. And not required, but definitely appreciated. So subscribe to my blog because the only place to when these arcs will be given away is on my blog, (with the exception of three copies, which will be given to Moon Stalkers FB Discussion Group members).

Third: now I’m going to discuss something that I touched on earlier when I notified people that I will be publishing the last books in Otherworld on my own.

First: Yes, the primary reason I am doing this is because Berkley has passed on publishing anymore of the Otherworld series. But, I also want to finish the series story arc.

But also: publishing is a whole new world at this point. There are so many options and so many possibilities that I’m curious to see just what I can do on my own. Don’t get me wrong: I love having a traditional publisher and I hope to continue having one. (And no I’m not just saying that because they might be reading this blog. Truthfully, I have always swung toward being a traditionally published author because I prefer to write rather than do all the other work and I love having a big house behind me).

But there is a downside to having a traditional publisher: I don’t always get contracts to write all of the things I want to write. And—say, in the case of — say Otherworld — if they decide they don’t want more of a series, unless you self publish, well, that’s pretty much the end of that series. And lastly: hybrid authors tend to do better financially.

So what does this mean? It means some of my work will only be available in e- format. It means that some will be available in both print and format.

The short collections I have been writing and will continue to write are currently only available in e- format because it simply isn’t financially viable to use a format to put them in print. I know, peeps have said they’d pay for them, but seriously, no—you wouldn’t pay $10 to have a novella/novelette. Trust me, you’d feel ripped off and rightly so.

However, in the future — and I cannot predict if/when this will happen and I’m not making promises — I may collect several of the short collections into a larger volume where I can justify charging the amount it would cost.

What does all of this mean, Yasmine?

Well, in a way, it means you get more work of mine to read. Because if a publisher doesn’t like series idea that I’ve come up with — and that has happened — that means now I can write it on my own. This happened last year. I proposed a series idea and we couldn’t come to an agreement on contracts. So, this year, I’ve decided to write a couple novelettes in my yet-unpublished Lily Bound series. If people like it and buy it, I will write more.

Also, I have mentioned I was working on a YA idea and that’s kind of bit the dust. I’ve come to realize I just don’t have the voice for it. So I’ll leave that to other writers who do. However, I’m reworking the concept into another adult series that I hope will fly with the (traditional) publishers.

So expect to see a lot of changes coming through in the next year or so. But one thing I promise you: as long as you continue to buy my books I will continue to write for you because I love what I do and I love telling stories, and I love that you love stories.

Tomorrow, on the blog, we will be back to a year of trees. Sheesh, I tell you though, the next time I get the bright idea to do a year long photo shoot, it will be in my own yard somewhere!

Monday, we will be back to snippets of flight from death on the blog. And at some point this coming week we will be starting the contest for arcs from flight from death. So stick around, peeps. And have a lovely weekend!

I wish you well on your publishing endeavor. The excitement you must feel just thinking of all the freedom this will offer you must be huge!

Question about giveaways. How long between giveaways would you like us to wait before entering another if we win one? I’m guessing there’s a time frame somewhere on this. Thanks again!

So far I’m not ‘into’ e-books so I wait for the paperbacks. Which means I’m glad you’re considering putting several of your short stories together in book form for those of us who prefer a book in our hands. I love all your stories, short or long and often have bought anthologies just because one of your short stories is in it. You are heading into new territory, Yasmine, with self-publishing and I know you will enjoy and overcome in this adventure! Glad to be along for the ride.

I know, I prefer print to e-books too…but it’s a lot more complicated the more you have to take on yourself. So…all I can say is we’ll see how it goes! 🙂

I figure that way you’ll know what is going on and the more you stay updated, the more you’ll know when the books are out and why things are going a certain way.

I didn’t have the opportunity to respond on yesterday’s book cover reveal and excerpt so I’ll do that first here… I was surprised to realize there were two people on the cover – really didn’t expect that but the picture certainly has me thinking hard about the storyline and I’m anxious to read more than just snippets of the tale. As usual though, the excerpt revealed a depth and intensity that I’ve come to expect from you. I look forward to reading the full tale.

That said, you’re a phenomenal author and I love the way you reel us into your worlds. Whatever it takes to continue reading your work, you’ll have this reader’s support.

It’s not typical urban fantasy. LOL And Bryan–on the cover–is very important to the series/story. 😉

Everything you do is great so I don’t think you need to worry about any future books, self published or not. If you write them we will read.

Yasmine, you write and I will read. I have all of the OW collections in ebook. I have an ereader, but am still trying to learn to use it as it would be a lot lighter to carry than books on trips, etc. I’m very excited to see what you will be writing and publishing on your own. Peace.

Thank you so very much for finishing the Otherworld series, I just really, really hope they are in book format, I have collected them all and have had them signed by you as well. I would be brokenhearted if it was only in E format 🙁 Kind of hard to have you sign my Nook.. And I hate reading on it, it hurts my eyes badly. Whining aside, if that is the only way for now I would get to read them, I would, and hope that one day they come out in book form. I love your writing, and will read no matter how you print it. Thank you for all you do, it means a lot to me and other readers that you keep us in the loop on things. You are an amazing woman 🙂

I really appreciate that you want to finish the story arc for the Otherworld series. I read another series where the publishing house did not want more of the series, but the author did not want to self-publish. I was heartbroken, but I understand not wanting to do all that goes into self-publishing. I just wanted to thank you so much for wanting to self-publish the OW series.

Self-publishing is difficult…and frankly, takes second-place to my contracted work because advances pay my mortgage, food, etc. upfront. But I will finish this series. And hopefully give you lots of fun novelettes on the side. 🙂
