Aug 23 trees

There is a street nearby that I absolutely love. Really, it could be any street, there’s nothing really outstanding about it, except for the fact that it is lined with trees. Now this a common sight around here except these are all deciduous trees. And every autumn they blaze into color around the same time. And every spring, they suddenly burst forth with leaves around the same time.

We have lived in this neighborhood since September 2010, so for four years now Samwise and I have driven down that street several times a week and I have watched the trees change through the year. So yesterday, when I was commenting on how much I like that street, Samwise suggested an idea and it seemed like a cool project. We’ll see if I can manage it — or rather manage to remember to do it — but I want to give it a try.

Every week, every Sunday, we will drive over there and I will take a picture from the same place. And I will post that picture on my blog. For a year, I will chronicle the change of seasons through these pictures. Maybe I’ll get bored partway through and stop, or maybe in a year I’ll have 52 pictures of the street from the same position. I guess we’ll find out!

Week 51: This is the second to last week. I’m amazed I’m here to be honest–amazed I kept this going. I am already thinking about a new project for the coming year. Okay, changes this week–the leaves are definitely starting to shift and this year, that’s early. I’m not sure what it foretells…whether it’s the lack of water, the extreme heat we had, or a forecast of an early autumn (which I’m hoping). But there are colored specks among the trees and not just along this street. We’ve had cooler weather, not cool–but cooler, which has been welcome. Now, for rain, and we will be happy. The eastern side of the state is burning up right now, literally, and there is a haze in the air from the smoke drifting over from that side. It’s terrible and sad–three firefighters were killed the other day in the flames, and another four or so injured. Such a harsh summer.

They are predicting (hoping/praying) that we in the western US will get rain this fall/winter/spring – we sure need it. One of the parks here in the Sacramento area just cut down 55+ trees today that they had been trying to save, but with the four year drought, they are just getting sicker. Very sad.

Our leaves are falling too, and I, like you, am wondering if it’s the dearth of water or signifying the change of seasons.
The birds are migrating from the North Slope…yellow warblers at the feeders…fireweed is flossing out, the usual signs of seasonal change.
Our AK fires have calmed down but poor Eastern WA is horrible. My brother lives in Wenatchee but was safe from that fire…dreadful the loss of life and the injuries suffered by the firefighters…praying for them and all their families.
