Dead Poets Society Cover

While I enjoy spring and summer, it feels like autumn is the true beginning to my year. During the spring I am tying up loose ends to all projects, and during the summer it feels like everything is on an odd hiatus while I wait for people who are on vacation. Let’s face it, the publishing world slows down to a crawl during the summer. Not that my work slows down, but getting things done feels like it takes forever.

And then, September hits, and it feels at the world comes alive again. During autumn and winter I seem to have movies that I watch over and over again — every year I watch these movies. They had become as much of seasonal traditions as my magic and decorating.

During September, the two movies that I always seem to watch are Dead Poets Society and The Four Seasons. For some reason these two movies embody autumn to me. I do not lump these into my October movies, because they are not spooky. There is a melancholy feeling to both of them but they are also strong character stories. In fact, Dead Poets Society is one of my favorite movies. I have watched these movies every year for longer than I want to say. In fact, at the end of the movie, Dead Poets Society brings me to tears every time. The message of that movie resonates so deeply within my heart as an artist, and Robin Williams did such a wonderful job. It’s been a little bittersweet the past two years considering his death — and how it oddly mirrors the movie.

The Four Seasons, while it cycles through the entire year, seems to be an autumn movie to me as well. Alan Alda and Carol Burnett did a wonderful job depicting a couple going through both the good and bad times of a marriage. Next month I’ll have a whole bunch of movies to talk about. What are your early autumn movies?

I haven’t watched Dead Poets Society in years. Loved it though. Need to find it…. Practical Magic, Harry Potter, & Lord of the Rings I can watch all year! Doesn’t have to be September!

I love Dead Poets Society…Always have. It’s a bittersweet movie and even more so now that Robin Williams is gone.

I really do not rewatch movies…but I’m so glad you enjoy them and can understand the impulse.

I love Sleepy Hollow with Johnny Depp. I also watch the Lord of the Rings movies. They are favorites. I also love I married a Witch with Veronica Lake – it’s a really old romantic comedy.I Watch Casablanca all year. My favorite scary movie is the original version of The Haunting of Hill House with Julie Harris.

Yah, for me Sleepy Hollow is one of my *October* movies, (also Haunting of Hill House), but Lord of the Rings? I can see that–though I tend to associate them with winter because they came out in December. Maybe Harry Potter movies too!

I don’t have one that I can think of! I’m commenting though because its now 2 polls that I haven’t been able to answer, and I find it frustrating.

There are simply too many options with too many characters that I love.

So I abstain. From the polls…let’s be clear here!

When it comes to early autumn movies, it kind of jumps around, but I like to watch A Walk in the Clouds and The Last Unicorn the most during the early autumn before I start heading into my more late October to holiday movies.

Amazing movie, Dead Poets Society. I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of watching that one. I know it’s more of a winter movie, but I love watching Serendipity over and over again. From the Louie Armstrong music background to the probability of one meeting their soul mate and letting fate take it’s chance, I love that movie. I also enjoy watching Practical Magic & Hope Floats. 🙂

Sleepy Hallow with Winona and Johnny. The atmosphere is totally late October. The Dead Poets Society is also beautifully bittersweet.

Winona wasn’t in Sleepy Hollow with Johnny. It was Christina Ricchi.
