Welcome to the Witching Season

Every year, on October first, I write my Welcome to the Witching Season post. October has always been my favorite month and autumn, my favorite season. This makes sense, of course, given I’m a shamanic witch and this season is made for witches and mystics. Right on schedule, the rains are starting here as the season of ghosts rolls in. For Pagans, the new year—Samhain is not only the festival of the dead but the celebration of the Pagan New Year. For those of us who are ‘real’ witches, this is our time.

This is also the season for all lovers of the paranormal—this is the season of imagination. Ghosts lurk in the shadows, trolls creep out from under their bridges, vampires go on the hunt, and that howling you hear? No, it isn’t the basset hound next door—it’s a werewolf peeking out of the forest under the full moon.

Every year I have a tradition—to my closest female friends I send a card that I found years ago and bought many many copies of (SO many copies). There’s a line inside about “…this burnt orange season” and so I send my ‘burnt orange cards’ every year—not via e-mail, but honest, snail mail cards just to say hey, I’m thinking of you this wonderful season. It heralds in the autumn for me now like an old friend, sitting, writing little notes by hand in an age of all-things-keyboard and makes me think of bonfires and hearthfires and applesauce and cinnamon buns and community.

So as spiders spin their webs (and spider season here is like a free-for-all), and our rainy season descends here in the Pacific Northwest, I welcome you to the Witching Season here on my blog.

Tell me, what about this season makes you shiver at night, and wrap the covers just a little tighter around you?

Cold, eerie winds freak me out. The cats don’t like them either, which is most of why I don’t like them. And I’m not fond of the fact that the spiders are coming in from the cold! But otherwise, I love this time of year. Working on our Samhain ritual and trying to find new ideas is always fun. Hot chocolate, spiced hot cider, etc. – my sort of thing!

This is my favorite time of year & I too celebrate the season of the witch. I live for all things pumpkin & spice. I feel the veil thin. I honor my ancestors & those dear to me who crossed over this year.

What makes me shiver? Seeing shadows & spirits passing by on chilly nights. I love snuggling under extra thick piles of blankets knowing the spirits roam free.

During the day, I love to sip my pumpkin spice latte & watch the leaves fall while a thick blanket of clouds covers the sky. I feel my heartbeat with the earth in her transition to sleep. Nature becomes peacefully quiet, and my mind has a much needed rest. As I stare out the window & let my mind wander the spirits pass thru the trees. I feel the warm glow of this season & I am at peace.

I just lied to be scared and something about this season like you said is made for spookes. I lover the smell, the colors and just all things autumn.
I live in North west Florida so this is the best time of year to me bc it means less humidity/heat and a coolness that we only get to enjoy for about a month and a half before it either gets really cold (to us lol) or warms back up and makes for a crapy winter.
