Welcome to the Witching Season

my pumpkinscape--pumpkins and gourds arranged on the picnic table with a Halloween tablecloth

Every year, I write a post on October 1st called Welcome to the Witching Season, and today is no different. I love this post. I love that it’s time to write it, because I love the autumn, and I love the descent into the waning year, into the dark time of the year. This is the time of spirits and pumpkins, of acknowledging our ancestors and acknowledging the end of the life cycle. It’s the third harvest, the time of slaughter–when we harvest meat for our table. Even vegetarians kill to eat–we all do. We must kill to live. Putting aside all arguments on either side (and any comments berating either vegetarians or carnivores will be deleted), the fact is, the act of living involves death on so many levels.

cornucopia by the fireThis is the time of year when–here–the mists rise, the forests echo with the fall of raindrops, the smell of petrichor fills the air. The fog rolls in to cover the roadways, ghosts rise and walk, trolls hide in the shadows, the Veils lift and we hear the echo of ages past call our name.

Here, the spiders are looking for their mates (always frightening for me), the winds are rising, and the Autumn Lord walks the fields, a trail of frost in his wake. This is the Witching Season, and it belongs to those of us who revel in all things haunting.

So welcome to the Witching Season, and tell me what your favorite things about this season are!

I love this time of year, The longer nights and cooler weather. Being able to snuggle up warm with a good book and warm drink. The adventures of taking a walk, seeing the beautiful colors, the frosty nip in the morning. All the spirits and ancestors. Magical time of year

My favorite time of the year! My home is decorated in a Samhain theme a good portion of the time, but new decorations are being added.
I love the crisp cool air, the changing leaves, my comfy blanket coming out.
And, cinnamon grog wit cloves, nutmeg, apple cider, and spirits. Bonfires!
Pumpkins and carving, and baking seeds. I love everything about Autumn… It sings to my soul.

Me too! We start with Lughnasadh, then full tilt into autumn decor beginning of Sept, then add Samhain decor beginning of October, and then Samhain comes down beginning of November, and autumn gives way to Yule decor the week before Thanksgiving!

I love the chill in the morning air, just before dawn, that pushes back the humid residue of summer with its cleansing breath.
