Dawn asks: Do you come up with the hook first, or do you create characters first and then dig through until you find a hook?

Answer: I always meet my characters first. I never consciously ‘create’ a character–my subconscious does all the hefty lifting, and at some point before I start the book, I’ll catch a glimpse of the character and then, when I’m ready to write the book, the story begins. I will usually have about a page long (if that) synopsis, and of the characters I already know (if it’s an ongoing series), I’ll know what character growth needs to happen for some of the characters. But for the hook–the first day I actually ‘start’ writing the book, I sit down, hands on the keyboard, and I just write.
